Abstract

This paper deals with transport of air, tracer gas and moisture through cellulose fibre insulation. Moisture permeability, permeability for dinitrogen oxide (N2O) and the specific permeability for the material when considered as a porous medium were measured. This material is among so called ”Eco-builders” said to breathe in the sense that contaminants such as carbon dioxide (CO2) are removed from the indoor air by a diffusive process and thus reduce the need for ventilation. This statement about ”breathing walls” is here elucidated by application of well-known equations describing diffusive transport. For the construction studied is concluded that the diffusive removal of carbon dioxide from the indoor air has not an extent big enough to justify reduced ventilation. The walls humidity balance is not treated in this report.
