Abstract

In this study it was investigated whether the use of fine cements can improve the microstructure and properties such as freeze de-icing salt resistance of high performance concrete. Replacement of silicafume by other fine mineral additions such as ground granulated blast furnace slag improves the consistency of fresh concrete at constant water and plasticiser content. In comparison to concrete without additives partial replacement of cement by fine cement depending on the amount, type and fineness yielded a strength increase similar to that of silicafume. Moreover the addition of fine cement lead to the increase of 1 day strength while the addition of granulated blast furnace slag lead to increase of 7 day strength up to 23 % compared to concrete containing silicafume. Adding fine particle additives to high performance concrete can influence its durability positively, and it clearly improved de-icing salt scaling resistance. In this study the results of the CDF (Capillary suction of De-icing and Freezing and thawing) test show that the scaling as a criterion was reduced to approx. 85 % compared to that of the reference specimens.
