Abstract

Tanzanians, like other people in the developing, countries are faced with housing problems both in urban and rural areas. The demand for houses and all other kinds of buildings, is the major driving force which is creating the need for building materials. There are different types of building materials which are well known and used worldwide. Some of these materials are locally available and some have to be imported other countries. It is of great if we utilize the locally low cost and durable building materials. In the ongoing drive for utilization of local building materials, sisal-cement sheets and burnt clay bricks will play an important role. Burnt clay bricks are a high quality building. material which can be used for load-bearing walls. This material therefore provides a long technical solution to structural walling. Most of the traditional roofing materials of, East and Southern Africa, that is thatch, leaves or grass, have the disadvantage that their vulvanerability to insects, fungus and fire give them a relatively short life. The use of sisal-cement sheets will provide a good alternative. In many developing countries sisal-cement sheets can be produced locally at a low cost
