Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the elastic behavior of fiber reinforced cement mortars. The composite material was produced from a mixture of sand, cement and water in weight proportions of 1: 1: 0,4 , respectively. Sisal fibers, amounting to 3% of the combined weight of sand and cement, were added and then thoroughly incorporated by the wet mixture. Mechanical Characterization of both the composite as well as the plain mortar was carried out by means of three point slow bend testing, using square prismatic bars obtained by molding and curing of the wet mixture. In an effort to evaluate the effect of discontinuities on the elastic behavior, slow bend tests were also carried out in the presence of parallel sided notches of different root radii. By measuring the local deformation at the notch root, it was possible to estimate the stress acting there and hence to determine the elastic stress concentration factor, Ks , for a given notch root radius, r . The Ks values are presented and discussed in terms of r and then compared with those calculated theoretically.
