Abstract

Sustainable development is a general all-encompassing concept stating that development needs not to implicate in environment degradation. This concept recognizes the need for development in order to meet present and future needs. In order to be effectively applied, the general concept of sustainable development needs a well-defined context. This paper reports an attempt to employ the principles of sustainable development by performing an analysis on urban stormwater management in the context of a developing country. Urban stormwater management in developing countries shows a set of particularities when compared to that of developed countries. These particularities are mostly related to urban planning and regulation, operation and maintenance of drainage systems, economic, educational and social questions. In tropical regions they may also be related to rainfall regime, soil types and other catchment and climatic characteristics. In order to better characterize these issues, the urban stormwater management experience in the city of Belo Horizonte is considered as a case study. Belo Horizonte is a 2.5 million-inhabitant urban region located in the Southeast Brazil. Also a program of activities is proposed, in order to improve the urban planning and stormwater management by taking the translation of sustainability into actions as an objective.
