Abstract

The determination of the silica fume content in herdened concrete is very difficult, both beacause it is an active product that is transformed by reacting with the portlandite in the system , producing CSH phases of low Ca/Si and also because other active additions, of a distinct nature, interfiere with the analysis. We have been inable to find any antecedents in the lirerature for this specific determination. The interest in having such a procedure available is justified both for obtaining a follow-up of its reaction in the concrete as well as for the study of the durability behavior of the concrete in relation to its content and degree of hydratation reached as a funtion of time. A dilute solution at low temperature hydrochloric acid is proposed for the CSH phases extraction, which will avoid the co-precipitation of the silica. A pracically selecctive solution of NaOH 1.3 M, 0.4 KCl M., is proposed to the extraction of the silica fume from the insoluble residue of the prior attack. Finally it is suggested that a KOH 4.5 M., solution is used to evaluate the potential activity material in concrete due to the presence of the active additions apart from the silica fume. A method of consecutive attacks is given for this analysis of hardened concrete with active additions.
