Resumo

Enthusiasts of the intentional communities known as cohousing hope that this model will become mainstream in the new millennium. Cohousing is a homeowners movement to build communities with strong resident participation in all stages. Neighbors participate in the design and management of their community; share property and responsibilities, and engage in voluntary interdependence. The result is a supportive community where lifestyle aspirations of the residents seem to fit tightly with the shape of their built environment. This vision is based on the premise that the built environment contributes to shaping behavior and thus social interaction. Cohousing communities are designed in accordance with design for social contact principles, which imply that increasing density, grouping structures, and emphasizing pedestrian circulation provide the necessary affordances to develop a strong sense of community. This report presents the case study of Lake Claire Cohousing in Atlanta, southeastern USA. This on-going exploratory research relied strongly on experiential methods such as participant observation and interviews, and on qualitative formal analysis of architectural documents. The research addresses the question whether the design for human contact features of the community may be associated to the supportive behaviors and social interaction observed among members of this community.
