Abstract

Solid wastes from the leather industry, like shave-machine dust are voluminous landfill occupants and new forms of utilization need to be found. In the State of Minas Gerais, at least 11,500 kg of this residue is discarded daily by 54 tanneries, according to a study organized by the Leather and Skins Tanning Industry Trade Union of Minas Gerais (1). Meanwhile, there has been a resurgence of interest in using different fibers for fiber reinforcement of concrete in developing countries and elsewhere. The effect of heat, plus the high cost and corrodibility of steel reinforcement in concrete indicates a need to find alternatives to its use (2-3). This article shows how the addition of certain percentages of wet-blue shave-machine dust can modify properties of concrete like compressive and surface impact strength, density and dynamic modulus of elasticity.
