Abstract

Retrofitting of concrete structures with external prestressing of unbounded tendons presents many advantages. It is an efficient, fast and secure construction technique. Tendons are connected to the structure only by deviators and anchor devices and present low friction losses. Tendons can also be repaired and substituted. External prestressing reduces flexural deformations and can close existing cracks. However, modeling of the mechanical behavior of externally prestressed frame structures demands adequate tools. A numerical formulation is presented in this paper. It is based on the Finite Element Method. Non-linear behavior of materials and friction between tendons and deviators are considered. The formulation yields the slip of the tendon at the deviators and the resulting tendon forces after prestressing, fastening, and loading. The concrete beam element and the steel cable element are presented. An example of retrofitting concrete structures with externally prestressed tendons is discussed.
