Abstract

This paper analyzes the time for corrosion initiation of bars embedded in conventional and high-performance concretes made with different types of cement (normal and type III cements), mineral admixtures (natural pozzolan and granulated blast furnace slag) different curing times (7 and 28 days). The chloride diffusion coefficient is determined by applying the AgNO3 solution spray method. From this coefficient the time for corrosion initiation is theoretically calculated. Based on the obtained data, the influence of the above factors is analyzed to define concrete performance with respect to reinforcement corrosion. It is confirmed that high-performance concrete exhibits good behavior with respect to chloride corrosion of their reinforcements. However, from the standpoint of durability design, the time for corrosion initiation can be extended with the use of higher water/binder ratios and mineral admixtures. Such time depends on the cement type and mineral admixture used.
